仏、答へて曰く、「汝、飲食を儲け

て、 自恣の僧を供養して、その残りをもて母に

与へば、自ら得ることもありなむ」。目連、仏の御

教へのままにしxて、飲物を持て行きて、母に進む

るに、炎になることなくして、心のままに食す

ることを得たり。

Buddha replied and said “Thou, get food and drinks, and bestow it upon the monks on the last day of the Vessa festival, take the leftovers to your mother and if you give them to her, she may be able to have some as well.” Mokuren did so exactly according to Buddha’s teachings, took the drinks and when he gives it to his mother, she was able to consume to her heart’s content without the drink becoming fire.
