What is this scroll?
Set in one of the Six Realms of Existence, the Hungry Ghost Scrolls depicts the tales of 'gaki' (餓鬼); hungry ghosts who cannot eat or drink. The Hungry Ghost Scrolls were created in the late Heian (794-1185) to early Kamakura (1185-1333) periods (Kyoto National Museum, n.d.). The scroll has seven scenes, each painting accompanied by text that describes the contents of the painting.
This website aims to provide an accurate translation of the Hungry Ghost Scrolls and provide explanatory notes. Use this website to explore the stories of their suffering and salvation in the Hungry Ghost Realm!
*Note: The printed text has been augmented to include Kanji
