I hear that those same ghosts preserve their lives by taking and drinking the drops of water that are scoped up and offered by the people for the sake of their parents who have died.
Notes
The scene is elaborate despite its short amount of text. We can see the details specific to its Heian cultural context. Along the left, we see people gathered around the stupa, making offerings (Wakabayashi, 2020). Hungry ghosts have crowded this area, licking the drops of water that have splashed onto the floor. Despite the hungry ghosts being so close to the humans, the humans seem to be unaware of the ghosts' presence.
