Notes

The original Japanese text in this scene is incredibly long and therefore difficult to translate as one sentence in English. The English translation has been broken up into sentences that make the most sense.

[1] し - this is another auxillary verb, meaning personal past. This can be directly translated into English as the Buddha was 'personally' taught Ananda.

[2] 百千万那由他恒河沙数 - This compound word has been translated as 'countless'; however, 'countless' doesn't quite grasp the extent of the number of ghosts saved. 百千万 'hyakusenman' - directly means 'hundreds, thousands and tens of thousands' or 'multitudinousness'那由他 'nayuta' - 'an extremely great number (often said to be 100 million)'恒河沙数 'gōgasha' - innumerable', directly means the sand in the Ganges River.

Combining all these numbers together isn't possible, so the word 'countless' has been used.

[3] Four Buddhas called upon by the monks.

多宝如来 'tahōnyorai'
妙色如来 'myōshikinyorai'
広博如来 'kōbakunyorai'
離怖畏如来 - 'rifuinyorai'

如来 'nyorai' - a synonym of Buddha and one of his ten titles. Nyorai is the translation meaning ‘coming from suchness’ (Bowker, 2000).
