Salvia elegans is also know as pineapple sage. The challenge with this plant is that it often blooms in October after all of the hummingbirds have departed. A hummingbird gardening friend in Milwaukee brought us this beautiful plant in a pot that he forced to bloom. He pinched back the plant several times and then in August, he placed the plant in the dark between 5 pm and 7 am. This forced the plant to think that it was autumn, and it started to bloom profusely.
