Nepeta

Here is a hummingbird plant that we discovered by accident. And, what a happy accident. In the spring, our first blooming perennial which is an absolute favorite of hummingbirds is honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens). In July, another premier hummingbird perennial in this part of the country is bee balm (Monarda didyma). Nepeta, also known as catmint, is a favorite hummingbird perennial flower whose bloom time may be between honeysuckle and bee balm. However, in 2011, our catmint and bee balm are blooming simultaneously, and the hummers are using the catmint as much if not more than the bee balm. Kathi has tasted the nectar in these flowers, and it is plentiful and sweet. Unlike honeysuckle and bee balm whose flower colors are in the orange/red family, as you can see, catmint has lavendar flowers. Despite the color, these flowers are favored by hummingbirds.

This particular variety is 'Six Hills Giant'. We also have Nepeta sibirica 'Souvenir d'André Chaudron' and hummingbirds go to this variety also. Both of these Nepeta varieties can be found at Blue Stone Perennials:
