This is in the Lamacieae family, but is native to Africa and India. A common name for this is Klip Dagga. (Some sources refer to this as Lion's ear, but that common name is more closely associated with Leonotis leonuris). We grew Klip Dagga in 2025 and, oh my, what a plant. Our plant came from a local nursery and was 6 to 8 inches tall initially. The final height of this plant was 13-14 feet, and it stood tall without any staking!
This plant sets a tremendous amount of seed and can be considered invasive. It is highly discouraged to plant this in Florida or Hawaii. We shall see if this self sows in our Wisconsin garden.
