Liatris ligulistylis

In addition to gardening for hummingbirds, we decided in 2017 to also provide nectar plants and host plants for butterflies. Liatris ligulistylis (Meadow Blazingstar) is a new plant for us this year. It has been quite a hit with the hummingbirds. It is about 4 feet tall now and was steadily standing upright on its own prior to last night's heavy rain (thus, necessitating a plant support). In addition to seeing hummingbirds feeding from it, we have had hummers perch on the top flower and use this as their sentry post to defend the surrounding garden area. This plant is hardy to zone 3, so we look forward to seeing it return next year and will be interested to see how it performs as a second year plant.
