Year 1 GP placement

Year 1 GP placement

In 2004 I introduced a creative enquiry option into the year 1 GP placement as a way of students reflecting on a home visit with a patient. In the first year a few students wrote a poem, or a short narrative. These and some ideas on left and right brain, were shared the following year. Students stretched this learning space further and further, introducing, paintings, photography, sculpture, dance, music and more. After 6 years over 90% of medical students were opting for the creative enquiry approach. My doctoral research explored student learning through creative enquiry and established the importance of patient and student voice, narrative humility and lived experience.
