The Nasogastric Tube Insertion PowerPoint can be found within your Canvas course shell and at this link: NG Tube Insertion.pptm
NGT insertion is a clean procedure.
Always measure before inserting.
Signs of distress: gasping, coughing (especially if it doesn't stop), cyanosis, and inability to speak
Bring the head forward (chin to chest) to help close the trachea and open the esophagus.
Swallowing helps advance the tube, causing the epiglottis to cover the trachea. This can also help eliminate gagging and coughing.
Salem sump tube: secure the vent above stomach level. This prevents leaking of gastric contents and keeps the lumen clear for venting air.
The video is approximately 8.5 minutes and shows you the proper way to insert a nasogastric tube.
Salem Sump Tube
Blue = air vent; one-way valve is placed here if it has one
Blue part of the valve goes into the blue tube.
