Welcome to my website. My hope is that as you browse the following pages, you'll find informative and inspiring resources to augment your instruction of global competence; that you'll be challenged to expand your own understanding of the dynamic connections between countries, cultures, and local communities; and that - above all - you'll recognize the power you have as an educator to affect deep and meaningful change through the students you have the privilege to teach this year and beyond.

Use the tabs at the top of this page to toggle between sections, each of which is designed to provide you with meaningful definitions; links to organizations that are working at the intersection of education and global development at the local, national, and international levels; educational resources that will inspire dynamic pedagogy and which can be implemented into your daily instruction; and a renewed sense of purpose both for yourself as an educator and for your students who are already at the forefront of our dynamic global society.

Again, welcome! Please email me with any comments, questions, or suggestions. ~ Heidi ~

Dinner after the town councilmen from several surrounding villages went boar hunting. I was told there would be other women who would come for dinner and - later - dancing, though that did not occur. Instead, my husband and I witnessed how the local magistrates conducted business outside the county's boardroom - through collaborative hunting, conversation, several rounds of food, and a healthy pouring of spirits and libations. An Introduction to Global Education

In short, teaching students to be globally competent is to empower them to recognize the cultural, social, and economic contract that exists between nations, to appreciate that we do, in fact, affect each other's well being - locally, nationally, and globally - and that if we are to maintain our own peace and prosperity, we must work to ensure the same opportunities and rights for everyone, including those who are still fighting for such blessings. Globally competent individuals recognize the world's interdependence and interconnectedness and therefore seek to uphold international relationships and communications in order to address the world's pressing concerns. Becoming globally competent is also just plain fun. To see the beauty and creativity of different cultures and landscapes through the eyes of the locals usually involves dinner, dancing, and - in one such episode in the Czech Republic - boar hunting!
