When students care, they work harder having a sense of ownership. Using students' own judgment takes away the idea of just doing an exercise or following a set of directions. Students can have input and control (to a certain extent) over many aspects of a project. Students can even write their own driving questions and decide how they want to investigate it, demonstrate what they have learned, and make their work public.
