Learning Objectives

By the end of the module, Sea Cadets will be able to:

(a) perform five basic bends & hitches

(b) describe the practical applications of each of the five bends & hitches

Bends and Hitches

Ropes, knots and lines often linked to sailors and seamanship as it is an essential skill. Hence as a cadet, it is vital for you to be able to perform the basic bends and hitches

Task

Practice each knot a few times. Once you are ready, challenge yourself:

Perform each knot within 15 seconds successfully to prove that you have mastered it perfectly!
You may wish to video yourself tying the knots and share it with your cohort and Teacher Officers.

Watch the YouTube video and learn how to tie the:

Reef Knot,
Clove Hitch,
Round Turn & Two Half Hitches,
Bow Line and
Sheet Bend

You will need a length of rope, at least one metre long.
