The Himalayan University Consortium (HUC), the Secretariat of which is hosted by its founding member, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD, Kathmandu, Nepal), constitutes a group of more than 60 member universities from the Himalayan countries along the Hindukush range. In addition, there are many other associate member universities from outside the Himalayan range. The HUC encourages and facilitates mountain-specific research, education, outreach, and practice to build a new generation of transformational leaders committed to advancing HKH-specific research and innovative policy solutions. HUC is working towards a holistic voice for mountain development and research in the HK. In 2009, after a few high-level mutual visits from both side, the University of New Mexico (UNM) and the ICIMOD, a memorandum of understanding was signed in Kathmandu by a team led by then Vice President and Provost of UNM Dr. Suzanne Ortega (Sr. Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences Philipe Gonzales and Professor Dr. Alok Bohara of Department of Economics), making UNM and the Nepal Study Center (NSC) as partners of the HUC. Continuing that tradition, we look forward to forging deeper collaborative linkages between the HUC and the NSC's Himalayan Policy Research Consortium.
