Nutrition is important for wound healing in those that have medical conditions e.g. diabetes, kidney disease, poor blood flow, cancers, major surgery that lower the immune system. Age, poor nutrition even in the obese person, lower income, gut dysfunction, smoking, stress, poor food choices all eventually can impact over all health
Zinc, Vitamin C and protein are very important to consider if the wound is slow healing, as is treating the underlying cause.
Protein is required and can be lost through excessive oozing from leg ulcers and burns.
Eat foods that are high in protein such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, beans,
tofu, and peanut butter.
• Eat foods that are high in vitamin C. Some good food sources include:
citrus fruits (grapefruit, oranges, tangerines), strawberries, cantaloupe,
papaya, mango, bell peppers, red peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes.
• Vitamin A is also important for wound healing. Food sources include fortified
milk, cheese and margarine, eggs, spinach, dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli,
apricots, cantaloupe, squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin.
Vitamin C builds collagen in a wound and increases immunity. 1-2 grams a day
Zinc may be beneficial if you are low, as it is needed for protein synthesis and can speed wound healing. Even zinc impregnated gauze around a leg wound decreases inflammation and bacterial load.
It is cofactor for several enzymes
Deficiency impairs wound healing
o reduces epitheliasation rate
o reduction in rate of gain of wound strength
o reduction of collagen strength
Low protein, even for short periods can slow wound healing and quality of wound healing. Protein is used to build collagen, lymphatic function, and granulation tissue ( good red tissue) and this strengthens the wound. This is where arginine supplementation may be helpful. Those that have long term leaky wounds Increase your protein intake or try an arginine supplement. It may support long term wounds especially the legs or cancer wounds.
Vitamin D may be benifical in response to tissue injury and needed in higher amounts. It also increases general immunity. Many people who are in their homes and darker skin, winter time will tend to be vitamin D deficient and anything below 30 can have high risk of hospitalisation in other diseases such a covid.
Stress from injury can increase cortisol levels and decrease l-glutamine
