We are the tenant committee, and with you we are tenant activity!
We exist for ourselves, for all the HOAS-tenants of Viikki.
There are tenant committees at most of the HOAS-properties. Tenant committees are formed from regular tenants and their mission is to represent all the tenants of the area. Each year a new tenant committee is chosen for each area at the tenant meeting, in which tenants nominate themselves to join the tenant activity. Like you, we are just normal tenants who want to influence the HOAS-living in Viikki.
Each year the tenant committee hosts an array of events and activities for the tenants. In addition we maintain our clubrooms — and from time to time we also contact HOAS in tough situations. All the events and common doings are called tenant activity. It is free, voluntary and recommended for every HOAS-tenant.
Tenant activity is supported by HOAS: each tenant committee is granted an annual budget by HOAS. The tenant committee decides how the budget is used. With the budget the tenant committee is able to host that wide range of activities and can purchase useful stuff to the clubrooms. All decisions are made in the tenant committee meetings, which are open to all HOAS-tenants. Attending the meetings is even recommendable, as there you have a chance to influence our lives and decisions made. Tenants are notified about upcoming tenant committee meetings beforehand.
Tenant committee arranges a lot of events throughout the year: from board game events and pre-christmas party to voluntary workshops. The events are open and free to all HOAS-tenants. Different events and activities are one of the best ways to get to know your neighbors and make new friends. Together we are more.
Because tenant activity is controlled and guided by HOAS we also have limits and are not allowed to do everything we'd like to. The tenant committee's tasks are limited in certain aspects: we do not handle cleaning or maintenance of the buildings, so complain about related issues directly to HOAS, not us. You can, however, still contact us about all topics if desperation strikes, we might a difference together.
The tenant committee is also a lot more than just parties and sleepless nights. The tenant committee makes purchased to common areas and acts as a messenger between the tenants and HOAS — sometimes we even get what we ask for. At the beginning of 2020, the four previous tenants' committees of the Viikki area (tenants' committees of Pasteurinkatu, Viikki, Tilanhoitajankaari and Von Daehnin katu) merged into one large tenants' committee. The reason for the merger was a pilot project piloted by HOAS, the goal of which was to unify the area's HOAS residents even more and to develop HOAS' resident activities in general. The regional residents' committee is therefore made up of previous committees, whose expertise and knowledge of their own properties is the best possible. The members of the residents' committee are often divided up to be responsible for their own areas of responsibility, which are 1) Pasteurinkatu (1); 2) Tilanhoitajankaari (6 and 11); 3) Von Daehnin katu (14) and the largest 4) Vanha Viikki (Alempi Talonpojantie 4, Maakaari 1 and 6, Talonpojantie 5 and 10).
