Burton's Farm

The Burtons is a timber-framed house of medieval origin with a hall, solar and service wings. The hall was divided into two storeys in the 16th century. Further additions were made in the 17th century. It is possible that the wealthy Skynner family built or added to it during the time they lived there. Stephen Skynner of Le Burtons died there in 1557. It was only rich wool merchants like the Skynners who could afford houses of this quality. Stephen's son, Edward built Ledbury Park in the 1590s. His is the fine monument on the right of the chancel in Ledbury Church. Edward, his wife, Elizabeth and their 10 children, 5 sons and 5 daughters are shown on the monument. Other occupiers of the Burtons were 1602 - Richard Skynner, 1693 - Stephen Skynner, 1768 - Richard Hooper, 1793 - Caleb Hankins, 1858 - James Barrett, 1879 - William Palmer, 1891 -Francis Cotton, 1941 - G.K.Cotton.
