Intuition is a subjective mechanism which enables us to perceive something without our knowledge of the perception process. A person is given a text in a language and they give it back in a different language, without knowing exactly how they did it. People who are able to translate without having had any formal training must rely on this mechanism. People who get the job of translating but whose abilities in one of the two languages are weak are in the same situation. Intuition is part of the experience. It is a set of strategies learned unconsciously, with the passing of time. This set of strategies could not be explained, or taught. So, if we want to teach somebody to be a translator, we must take the student’s intuitive capacity into consideration and leave them free to apply this capacity. The only limitation is that intuition can sometimes fail.

Intuición es un mecanismo subjetivo que nos permite percibir algo sin que tengamos conocimiento del proceso de percepción. Se le da un texto en una lengua a una persona y ella lo devuelve en otra sin saber exactamente cómo lo hizo. Las personas que logran traducir sin haber tenido ninguna formación formal deben recurrir a este mecanismo. Las personas que consiguen un trabajo de traducción, pero cuyas habilidades en una de las dos lenguas son débiles, están en la misma situación. La intuición es parte de la experiencia. Es un conjunto de estrategias aprendidas de forma inconsciente, con el paso del tiempo. Este conjunto de estrategias no podría ser explicado, o enseñado. Así pues, si queremos enseñar a alguien a ser traductor, debemos tener en cuenta la capacidad intuitiva del estudiante y dejarle libre para que aplique esta capacidad. La única limitación es que la intuición a veces puede fallar.

Rhetoric is the art of expressing oneself in an effective, persuasive and charming way, both in writing and speaking. A rhetorical device is a technique of expression that can be used by the author to create an effect on the audience. The rhetorical device can be a metaphor, a repetition, an apostrophe, a personification, etc. Rhetoric is considered, by some people, to be a sophisticated and useless art. For others it is an essential part of writing, for it provides the writer with the techniques for being effective. According to the latter, rhetoric is a fundamental component of the writing process. In translation, rhetorical devices can pose some problems. Translators are asked to re-create the same effect on the target-language audience. Sometimes, the devices can be transferred directly; sometimes they have to be adapted. Rhetoric is always part of a specific culture. A phrase that may seem completely neutral and inexpressive in a language may sound very effective in another one, as a consequence of the different use of figures of speech in the two languages.

Retórica es el arte de expresarse de una forma eficaz, persuasiva y encantadora, tanto por escrito como hablando. Un recurso retórico es una técnica de expresión que el autor puede usar para crear un efecto en la audiencia. El recurso retórico puede ser una metáfora, una repetición, un apóstrofe, una personificación, etc. Algunas personas consideran que la retórica es un arte sofisticado e inútil. Para otros, es una parte esencial de la escritura, ya que ofrece al escritor las técnicas para ser eficaz. Según estos últimos, la retórica es un componente fundamental del proceso de escritura. En la traducción, los recursos retóricos pueden plantear algunos problemas. Se les pide a los traductores que recreen el mismo efecto en la audiencia de la lengua de llegada. A veces, los recursos pueden ser transferidos directamente; a veces tienen que ser adaptados. La retórica es siempre parte de una cultura específica. Una frase que puede parecer completamente neutral y sin expresividad en una lengua puede sonar muy eficaz en otra, como consecuencia del uso diferente de las figuras retóricas en las dos lenguas.

Intuition is a subjective, unconscious mechanism translators use, especially those without formal training. It's an experienced-based skill set that can't be taught but should be allowed to be applied. While a valuable part of a translator's process, intuition can be fallible.

La intuición es un mecanismo subjetivo e inconsciente que los traductores utilizan, especialmente aquellos sin formación formal. Es un conjunto de habilidades basado en la experiencia que no puede enseñarse, pero debe permitirse que se aplique. Aunque es una parte valiosa del proceso de un traductor, la intuición puede fallar.

Rhetoric is the art of persuasive expression, using devices like metaphors and repetition. While some see it as a useless art, others consider it essential for effective writing. In translation, rhetorical devices can be challenging because they are often culture-specific. Translators must recreate the original effect on the target audience, which may require direct transfer or adaptation of the devices.

La Retórica es el arte de la expresión persuasiva, utilizando recursos como las metáforas y las repeticiones. Aunque algunos la consideran un arte inútil, otros la ven como una parte esencial para una escritura eficaz. En la traducción, los recursos retóricos pueden ser un desafío, ya que a menudo son específicos de una cultura. Los traductores deben recrear el efecto original en el público de la lengua de destino, lo que puede requerir la transferencia directa o la adaptación de los recursos.
