An internship is a short-term job or program where you gain experience in a given field, such as research and business. Internships offer great hands-on and networking opportunities, as well as expose you to diverse career options. Internships generally take place during summer and are mainly offered to upperclassmen, but it is never too early to search and apply!

Resources:
Finding internships in high school can be difficult, so consider the following resources:
Speak with your counselor and/or college advisor (they tend to be up-to-date with local internship openings)
Be on the lookout for posters or announcements by teachers, clubs, and other staff (internships tend to be advertised)
Consider creating a LinkedIn and/or Indeed account to find opportunities near you
Universities nationwide offer summer programs. Whether it is your local community college or a prestigious private university, summer programs are a great way to enhance your resume and make your summer a productive one. Learn new skills, obtain college credit, or gain insight into the university's programs.
Local College Summer Programs:
Local public college summer programs are great options when choosing summer programs. Unlike most (but not all!) private universities, these programs are free or have low costs associated with the program. Below is a list of some summer programs offered in / near Miami. You can also search for other in-state or out-of-state summer programs by researching specific universities and their offered programs.
National College Summer Programs:
Most universities offer summer enrichment programs in various fields of study, many placing a heavy emphasis in STEM. These summer programs tend to be more expensive since tuition, fees, and travel expenses must be paid. However, some universities offer financial aid and/or scholarships but these are not guaranteed for all applicants (unless program is free of cost). If you are interested in out-of-state summer programs, consider researching your dream schools and you are sure to find programs for high school students.
Note: While these programs are great opportunities, it is important to remember that they are NOT necessary to gain admission into top universities. Paying thousands of dollars to participate in a program rather than engaging in a similar program for free in your local community is not worth it unless you have the means to cover the costs. College is expensive so do NOT waste money on programs if you have other options! Participating in a universities summer program will NOT guarantee you admission and in the end what you learned from the experience will be much more valuable than where it took place.
