Welcome to Heather's Portfolio
During this weeks assignment I used google news to research two different cyber security topics. For my research I chose internet theft and internet fraud. I chose these topics because I felt like they are both two occurrences I am worried about happening to me. I now am more educated on how to prevent myself to be a target for fraud and theft on the internet.
This articles tells the tales of internet scammers on the rise. In 2023 there has been 51,750 reports of these impersonation scams raking in 1.3 Billion of Americans lost money. These scams usually trick people using realistic stories saying they need to pay a fee in order to keep their insurance or sending false claims that a bill is owed. Most of these scams are tech related stating that you have a computer virus and the caller will help you remove it for a small incentive. Unfortunately statistics shows that the elderly are these scammers most successful victims. Not only are these scammers able to convince you to pay them a specific amount of money over the phone or computer but they can also retrieve your credit card information leading them to steal even more money. As of recently with AI technology scammers can leave messages mimicking the voice of their victims loved ones, making these scams even more believable. Now that we know what to look out for here's some tips I learned to help prevent you from getting scammed yourself. Know that the CIA or FBI will never contact you through a phone call or email and you should not pay attention to these messages as they are scammers trying to collect money. Don't use sketchy websites to buy items that are not relaible. This is a perfect way to get your credit card information stolen. And finally don't open any links or website that are unsecure.

A popular software called passGEN is now being used to crack peoples passcodes and steal their account information. This AI driven software is quite affective cracking 51% of passcodes with in one minute and 71% within one day. Not only is this software effective but it works fast. During this weeks lessoned I learned how to protect myself from both cyber theft and fraud. These are two of the most common attacks we all need to be on the look out for. I am constantly getting text messages and phone calls that are obviously scams. Although I know about them it makes me wonder how many people local to me are falling for the same scams themselves. Know that I know how to protect my self I can help share those tips to others. This lesson I also received my cyber security certificate.
This is my completed cyber security certificate from CCBC. This helped prepare me on topics such as phishing, malware and cyber theft.
