Content objective:
After completing conservation of mass lab where baking soda and vinegar were mixed in a sealed plastic bag you will determine whether a chemical reaction occurred based on your observations. You will use the Recap App on your iPad to explain the properties of the substance before and after the reaction and provide any evidence to whether a chemical reaction has occurred.

Differentiation:
Differentiation for Basic level ELL
-Provide definitions of chemical and physical changes prior to completing experiment and recap video
-I will watch the students recap video and make suggestions for improvement if needed and allow for resubmissions if needed
-Go over with student individually which observations are present when a chemical reaction happens before student starts recap video
-Provide student with sentence starters
-Provide student with a link to evidence of a chemical reaction from you tube on their Google classroom
Differentiation for Intermediate level ELL

Reflection:
This is a great assignment for EL students because they get the opportunity to use what they learned in class and through laboratory work to defend their position about chemical vs. physical reactions on the speaking video APP Recap. The EL student can rehearse what their position is as many times as they want on the app before they submit their final version. They can make their recap video, watch it, and decide if they want to tape in again and no one will ever have to see all their rehearsal versions. This provides the student with an ample opportunity to discuss science content vocabulary over and over in a non-stressful situation until they determine they have gotten it right.
