Lesson Plan #1-Modeling the Causes of Earth’s Climates
NGSS Standard:
MS-ESS2-6. Develop and use a model to describe how unequal heating and rotation of the Earth cause patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates.
Content Objective:
After reading Chapter 2 in your weather and climate text and watching the videos Sea vs. Land Breeze and Crash Course Kids #34.1 that I have provided on Google Classroom, you will make an Educreations presentation that describes how unequal heating of the earth creates local wind and global wind systems. In your presentation you must include the following vocabulary: sea breezes, land breezes, global convection currents, the coreolis effect, doldrums, trade winds, horse latitudes, prevailing westerlies, and jet streams.

All vocabulary is demonstrated in Educreations correctly-excellent
All vocabulary is demonstrated in Educreations and most are represented correctly-acceptable
Some vocabulary is missing in Educreations-poor

Reading-The student will read Chapter 2 in their science text book so they can define the science content vocabulary and describe how the unequal heating and rotation of earth affects climate.
Listening-The student will listen to the 2 videos I provided on my Google Classroom in order to determine how unequal heating and rotation cause earth’s different climates.
Speaking –The student will create a presentation on Educreations with their voice describing the causes of Earth’s climate based on the research they have collected.
Differentiation for 3 Levels of ELs:
Differentiation for Basic level ELL
- Preteach vocabulary that is used in presentation by providing the student with a Nearpod presentation on their iPad that has the vocabulary word, definition, and picture of vocabulary word
-Provide videos used in presentation the week before assignment
-Provide sentence starters for presentation
-Student can pick to either explain how unequal heating of earth leads to sea and land breezes or how unequal heating of earth leads to global winds, not both together
-Provide student with Khan Academy’s video of the explanation of the coreolis effect
-Frequent Check ins for understanding and to monitor progress on presentation
Differentiation for Intermediate level ELL

Lesson reflection:
This lesson provides the EL student with reading, speaking, and listening objectives. This project also provides the EL student with different types of sources to conduct their research. They have the classic textbook which provides the content information, definitions, and pictures where they can take their time and reread as many times as they need to gain understanding. The two videos provided for the students research provides audio and visuals to help the student understand the content. The videos can be watched as many times as needed depending on the student’s level of listening skills. Then the student gets to practice their speaking skills while recording their Educreations project and redo if necessary while putting together their presentation.
