Let's not focus on surviving but instead focus on ways of thriving. The Health and Physical Education Curriculum, 2007 (HPE) provides a platform to support this notion of enriching wellbeing.
HALO 4 unpacks the HPE curriculum and focuses on the wellbeing of the students themselves, of other people, and of society through learning in health-related and movement contexts..
“Our children’s wellbeing is central to their success as confident lifelong learners. Wellbeing is a concept that covers a range of diverse outcomes. In schools, it’s about young people playing an active role in their own learning and in developing healthy lifestyles.”

Keeping it fun and relevant with Rob Gambolati
Rob is a Senior Lecturer at Auckland University. Currently Rob is lecturing across Coaching and Physical Education courses in the BSpt programme.
Working closely with local primary and secondary schools is an important part of Rob's role as it provides opportunities for students to experience Physical Education as it is happening in schools. Being a member of Physical Education New Zealand (PENZ) also keeps Rob up to date on what is happening with Physical Education throughout New Zealand. Rob is currently studying at Masters level in Education.
Rob is very interested in helping people grow and learn as they prepare for a future teaching in schools. Outside of Unitec Rob stays busy with his three children, recreational running, and participating in any physical activity opportunities available.
Join Rob in this quick taster about how you can include fun, relevant games for your students.
Workshop 2 - Wednesday 27th 9 - 9.30am
Healthy Food and Drink Environments in the Classroom
We understand that changing a school’s whole food and environment to be “healthy” is a journey. Therefore, this presentation will look at a starting point; healthy food and drink environmentsin the classroom. The presenter Breanna Edge-Woodall (Public Health Dietitian from ARPHS) understands that criticising lunchboxes, encouraging weight loss in children and demonising fat and sugar is not only unhelpful, but ineffective in supporting Tamariki to develop positive relationships with kai. Therefore this presentation will only look at positive, holistic and mana-enhancing ways to discuss nutrition.
This presentation will cover topics including; what really determines health, mana-enhancing ways to discuss kai with Tamariki, critiquing negative nutrition messages, and lots of fun classroom activities that you can use to begin your journey to a healthy food and drink environment in the classroom.
Workshop 3 - Thursday 28th 9 - 9.30am
Good Sports
Good Sports® is all about creating positive sporting experiences for children and young people. It does this by supporting and educating parents, caregivers, coaches, teachers and sport leaders, who all contribute to children’s sport.
To address these issues and give children and young people the best chance of developing a lifelong love of sport, Good Sports focuses on raising adults’ awareness about their behaviours in youth sport and, if necessary, promoting a positive shift in that behaviour.
As teachers you are in a prime position to be advocates for Good Sports. Mick Coultard is Sport Waitākere's Community Coach and Club Lead. He will share with you ways you can incorporate the Good Sports philosophy into your school setting.
