See American Light for other Mustang (BLM, model bred, mixed and Spanish Mustang) offerings.
The Colonial Spanish Horse is not necessarily the same as the Spanish Mustang. Though the Spanish Mustang descends and is included in the broader context of the Colonial Spanish Horse, it is a separate breed derived from feral, Native American and ranch stock. The Spanish Mustang Registry was founded in 1957 as a concerted preservation effort for horses of Spanish phenotype, Though Colonial Spanish Horses are accepted in many mustang registries, not all mustangs are Colonial Spanish, genetically speaking.
Strains recognized as Colonial Spanish include Abaco Barb (now extinct). Baca Chica, Banker, Carolina Marsh Tacky, Cerbat Mustang, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Florida Cracker Horse, Galiceno, Kiger Mustang, Pryor Mountain Mustang, Santa-Cruz Island Horse, Sulphur Mustang, and Wilbur-Cruce Mission Horse.
You are welcome to cross any of the horses in this list for your Colonial Spanish/Spanish Barb designated foal. If you choose, you can cross with Mustangs, but the foal will be considered Mustang and not Colonial Spanish/Spanish Barb. See Cohonina under Mustang on the Retired page as an example of this type of cross.
The Colonial Spanish Horse (which the Wilbur-Cruce Mission Horse and Cerbat Mustang strains belong) was named Arizona's Heritage Horse on March 3, 2011. Examples of these horses have been accepted in several mustang registries including Southwest Spanish Mustang Association - SSMA, Spanish Mustang Registry - SMR, Spanish Barb Horse Association - SBHA, and Horse of the Americas - HOA. The SBHA created a separate division within its registry, specifically for the Wilbur-Cruce, in order to track bloodstock more closely. Both of these subgroups are considered endangered.
The Wilbur-Cruce Mission Horse is a Rancher strain from Arivaca, Arizona and is considered the last living remnant of the Spanish Mission type horse. The three main types of Iberian horses - the Carthusian/Villano warhorse, the Jinete/Jennet elegant riding horse, and the Gallego/Barb agile bullfighting and cattle working type are represented in the Wilbur-Cruce. The horses were originally bred and used by Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino's missions in Pimeria Alta (Arizona and Sonora, Mexico) during the late 1600's to early 1700's. In 1885, Dr. Reuben Wilbur outfitted his ranch with 26 horses from a herd driven up from Mission Dolores, credited as Padre Kino's main breeding center. The Wilbur-Cruce ranch continued to use and breed the horses until the late 1980's when Reuben's granddaughter, Eva Antonia Wilbur-Cruce, donated the ranch to the Nature Conservancy. The property was then transferred to Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. Eva's beloved horses were not welcomed on the refuge as she had hoped. Before removal, the horses were blood typed and divided into 5 breeding groups. I was fortunate to see one of these groups in 1990 when it was brought to the Arizona Pioneer Living History Museum, north of Phoenix. This band was eventually relocated when the museum deemed the breeding program unsustainable. Today, there are a handful of breeders in Southern Arizona that have brought these horses back to their native Arizona and continue to preserve the bloodlines of these special horses. Colors are chestnut, bay, grey, black, roan, tobiano, overo or sabino. Cream-diluted individuals exist but are extremely rare. Some individuals may also be laterally gaited.
The Cerbat Mustang is a feral strain from the Cerbat Mountains north of Kingman, Arizona. They are believed to be descended from the horses used by Spanish conquistadores during the early explorations of the Southwest. The horses could have banded together due to loss, escape, theft or other means. Regardless how they came to be, blood typing has confirmed the markers of Spanish blood despite heavy inbreeding. Today, they are considered the purist of the feral Spanish horse groups. Cerbats are long remembered among the local Native peoples and have a known history of purity on their present range since the 1860's. Mustanger, Ira Wakefield captured the original group of Cerbats. The descendants of those horses have made a significant impact on today's Colonial Spanish Horse. They have also been used to help supplement the feral population which today numbers about 70 individuals. Cerbat horses are a somewhat heavier old Spanish type similar in build to the classic Andalusian horse. A number of these horses exhibit the lateral gait, similar to the "paso" though the action may not be as extreme. They are roan, bay, chestnut and rarely black or dun (according to BLM). Grey was recently introduced into the herd by an unknown source and is not considered original to the herd.
I decided to focus on these families to commemorate Arizona's Centennial February 14, 2012. It's hard to imagine our history without their contributions.
