A fraction is a number between zero and one. A fraction is expressed as one number (numerator) over another number (denominator). We need numbers less than a whole number.
Look at the picture on the right. This collection of colored Lego blocks can be called a whole or a group. You can see there is one whole group of 12 colored blocks. The colored Legos can be represented as fractions of the whole. For example, there are 4 red blocks out of the 12 colored blocks. What is the fraction of the red blocks in this whole? 4/12 which means 4 red blocks out of 12 blocks.
Can you figure out the fraction of each color in this Lego figure?
By the end of Week 1, you will name a fraction and its parts by determining the number of equal parts of the whole (i.e., circle, rectangle) and name the shaded/unshaded parts in fraction terminology (numerator, denominator).
