In my final semester at Marist, I signed up for a 3D Modeling course to expand my digital art skills into a new dimension! Learning the ropes of Autodesk Maya was, by far, one of my favorite experiences in my academic career! While my sample size for 3D models is not as substantial, these pieces are among my best work in terms of my style and how I express myself through art! In addition to these two small projects, you can view my final narrative project, in which I use eight rendered scenes to tell a story about an exchange between the Angel and the Devil (yes, it is as cheesy a plot as it sounds...)
This 3D character model is a combination of the Super Mario Bros. character, Yoshi, and the stereotypical depiction of Satan. I went off Yoshi's design from the original source, changing his green skin to red to match with the stereotype of the Devil. Some of the Maya tools I used were "Extrusion" for the eyebrows, mustache, and nostrils, "Multi-Cut" for the fingers, and "Retopologize" to adjust the hand texture.
I made this small 3D bedroom to demonstrate my knowledge of light, shadow, and (albeit unintentionally) reflection in Maya, using the "Spotlight" feature in conjunction with the reflective Blinn material. Some of the objects are leftovers from a previous Primitive Models project, as well as some scrapped ideas from the aforementioned assignment.
"Don't Deal with the Devil"
This visual narrative was my final project for 3D Modeling. Having already made a character resembling the Devil, I decided to make a second model resembling an Angel-like Yoshi, and center the story around a conversation between good and evil. Parts of the 3D bedroom were reused and appropriately re-colored to match the Devil and Angel aesthetics. When I presented this eight-scene narrative to my class, I combined my artistic style with my ability to tell a story, leaving my classmates in hysterics with my satiric narration and bizarre plot to compliment each uniquely-rendered scene.
One morning, our favorite villain, the Devil, was sleeping peacefully, when, all of a sudden, the phone rang. Still half-asleep, he got up and went to answer the call.
Annoyed to be woken up (who wouldn't be?), the Devil answered the phone. However, he was even more frustrated when he realized who had the nerve to call him while he slumbered.
Oh boy... it was the Angel, trying to talk his evil counterpart into being nice, not to mention for the fourth time this week. Talk about being overly persistent! This guy just won't give up!
The Devil clearly wanted nothing to do with this goody-goody, especially in the early hours of the morning. He just wanted to go back to bed and have some peace and quiet.
Having had enough with the Devil's attitude, the Angel began to berate him for all of his bad deeds. Believe me, it's a very, very long list!
Not wanting to be nagged about kindness any longer, the Devil resorted to using his magic to put an end to this nonsense, then promptly hung up the phone.
Before the dial tone could even play, the Angel looked up. Looming above his head was a gray, rumbling storm cloud. Before he could react... ZAP!
The Angel was fried by a powerful thunderbolt. It was only after becoming just a pile of ashes that he finally learned his lesson: "Don't deal with the Devil."
