"Singing Workshop with Rena Struliou and Haroula Tsalpara"
The workshop focuses on the westernlike style of singing that later came to be known as "retro" or "light," a genre that began to take shape at the end of the 19th century in the first "cafe chantan." This singing style, influenced by the destruction of Asia Minor and Greece's entry into the musically fertile interwar period, merged with "Estudiantine" songs, inspector songs, Operettas, and Athenian cantades. The result was a Western-style musical hybrid with strong theatric and romantic-nostalgic characteristics, achieving great popularity socially.
The workshop invites participants to explore this genre together through typical musical examples. It covers the study of songs, focusing on aspects such as breathing techniques, pronunciation, expression, style, and particular interpretation. The goal is to achieve a beautiful artistic result and, by the end of the workshop, to have gained a taste of these songs that, despite their external influences, were embraced by a significant part of Greek society, achieving timelessness and immortality. Participants will have the opportunity to delve into the unique nuances of this singing style and cultivate their skills in order to deliver a compelling and authentic performance.
