Meres of Rebetiko Fesitval, Skopelos
12-15/7/2022
The workshop aims to explore and present different styles of interpretation by the women who shaped the era of greek-speaking gramophone. The workshop categorizes these singers into four groups based on style, place, and time period:
Pre-war singing Style: Featuring leading female singers representing Smyrna and Politic styles, including Marika Franzeskopoulou, Roza Eskenazi, Rita Ambatzi, and Georgia Mittaki.
Greek American diaspora Singers: Highlighting Marika Papagika, Kyria Koula, Amalia Vaca, and Virginia Magidou.
"Athenian" Strict Style: Aligned with the BPP (Popular Music Club) and represented by Ioanna Georgakopoulou, Daisy Stavropoulou, and Sotiria Bellou.
Post-war Lyrical Style: Showcasing the later and more lyrical style of Stella Haskill, Marika Nino, and Mary Linda.
Each day of the workshop will focus on a song from these styles. The goal is to bring these historical singing styles into the present, understanding the conditions that shaped each style and gaining a deeper appreciation for the featured artists. The analysis will explore similarities and differences related to melody, variation, subject matter, rhythm, and diction.
This workshop is open to anyone interested in exploring the world of the gramophone from a specific and enriching perspective.
