All medications, including over the counter (Tylenol, Midol, cough drops/syrup, etc) and prescription drugs (antibiotics, ADHD meds, etc), are to be brought into the office in their original containers and kept in the HLMS office. Medication must be delivered by an adult. A Medication Permission and Administration form, which can be obtained from the office, needs to accompany the medication. This will give the office personnel the correct dosage and time for the medication to be dispensed. All medication must be administered by school office staff.
Students who are required to keep their medication on them at all times, (i.e. inhaler) must have a medication permission form filed in the office. Students are absolutely prohibited from distributing any medication (prescription or over the counter) to other students. Failure to abide by this expectation will result in disciplinary action.
We can only dispense medications that are FDA approved. Students may come to the office to take the medication as prescribed. The office will not dispense any medication without a medication form and is required to document all dosages given. Forms available at the front office.
All students are required to be in compliance with State of Oregon immunization requirements unless they have a Medical or Non-Medical Exemption properly recorded with the school office. Any time a student receives a new vaccination, parents need to update the school office to ensure our records are current. Parents will be notified in writing if immunizations are incomplete or insufficient. Students who are not immunization compliant may be excluded from school until the necessary immunizations have been obtained and documented.
Parents of a student with communicable or contagious diseases are asked to contact the HLMS office so that other students who may be exposed to the disease can be alerted. Certain illnesses require exclusion from in person instruction while contagious, including COVID-19, chickenpox, mumps, whooping cough, measles, German measles, scabies, staph infections, strep infections, tuberculosis, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, conjunctivitis (pink eye), ringworm, influenza. Parents with questions should contact the office.
Bandon School District does NOT provide insurance coverage for student injuries which occur at school or during school events or activities. It is highly recommended that parents obtain student health insurance through their employer or local insurance agent whenever possible. Families may qualify for the Oregon Health Plan and should contact the Coos County Public Health Department at 541-756-2020 ext. 652 for further information. Supplemental insurance is available from a third-party vendor; however, the District does not recommend OR endorse this coverage.
Parents are responsible for maintaining up-to-date and accurate contact information through the HLMS office. Should an emergency arise, our school/district will follow standard protocols based on each situation. Safety drills are held monthly throughout the school year to instruct students in procedures that should be followed in case of fire, earthquake, tsunami, or intruders.
HLMS and the Bandon School District have adopted the ALICE safety protocol. ALICE is a proactive plan for unexpected safety issues at school and is adapted to consider student age and ability. Students and staff are trained at the beginning of each school year. ALICE is not a linear process, but rather a range of options for staff and students to use in a crisis situation. Materials for presenting information to students will be provided to each classroom to ensure a consistent message is shared with all students and staff.
Bandon School District is implementing School Messenger to communicate with parents in the event of an emergency or school closure. We also contact parents when the need for student pick-up arises due to illness or significant behavior concerns. Please keep your contact information up to date with the HLMS office to ensure that you receive any notifications necessary, including emergency contacts other than household parents.
Student safety is a top priority at Bandon School District. Safety instruction is given and practiced in all areas of the school camps. Please help your student by encouraging them to follow their after school plan directly without unexpected deviations, to never approach strangers or accept rides or gifts from unknown persons, to report suspicious persons loitering on foot or in vehicles near the building, to report any threatening behavior by students or adults immediately to a trusted school employee, and to always communicate with parents about any problem that they may be facing at school or in general.
Our school participates in the SafeOregon tip line. This program allows students, parents and community members the ability to report an incident or a concern. The program has a system to screen reports and notify the appropriate personnel whether it is the school, the police or social services. This tip line can be very effective and can be accessed online (www.safeoregon.com/report-a-tip/, via mobile app, phone (844-472-3367), text (844-472-3367), or email (tip@safeoregon.com). I encourage you to review the web site: www.safeoregon.com for more information.
