Plant-based meat, also called meat alternative and or mock meat, is produced from vegetarian or vegan ingredients. Instead of relying on animals as a main source of protein, plant-based meat is made from plant ingredients. They are composed of plant proteins such as soy, peas, or wheat, combined with oils, flavorings, and natural colorings to recreate the conventional meat.
Some believe plant-based meat differs from real meat. However, it also contains many of the same components, such as protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water, meaning that it can provide comparable nutrition value as an alternative.
Furthermore, plant-based meat promotes environmental sustainability, ethical choices, and healthier diet. Using less water, land, and energy, helps conserve natural resources. For example, growing crops directly for human consumption is more efficient than raising animals, which require large amounts of food and space. According to Good Food Institute, Plant-based meat has 91% lower impacts than beef, 88% lower impacts than pork, and 71% lower impacts than chicken on average. Greenhouse gases also are produced much lower, helping to prevent further climate change.
Unlike conventional meat which requires raising and killing animals, plant-based meat allows people to enjoy meat-like food without causing harm. By encouraging plant-based food, people make it easier to encourage systems that prioritize animal treatment and responsible, mindful consumption.
Moreover, the lower fat saturation and cholesterol rate can improve heart health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Many products are also high in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which help to meet nutritional needs while maintaining a balanced diet.
By 2020, more than 800 companies were either strictly producing plant-based products or had a brand line dedicated to the category. Beyond Food is one of the biggest plant-based food production companies, with main productions including sausages, burger patties and more. Their food can be found in both grocery stores and at a variety of restaurants.
