Climate change has a huge effect on precipitation. Pattern changes in precipitation have various impacts on our environment.
Now, what is a change in precipitation pattern?
A change in precipitation pattern is when the amount of precipitation increases and decreases in a short period or a specific period. You might wonder, why is this a problem.
According to NASA, the rising temperature of our earth will intensify the Earth’s water cycle, increasing evaporation. Increased evaporation results in the experience of intense precipitation and increased risk of flooding, while areas far away from storm tracks will experience drought.
Flooding
During flooding events, various detrimental impacts can occur. These include power, water, and gas outages, disruptions to transportation routes and commercial supplies, pollution of drinking water systems, damage to homes, buildings, and roads, as well as severe environmental issues such as landslides and mudslides. Floods can have far-reaching consequences that affect both infrastructure and the environment.
Droughts
During a drought, you can see dry, brown vegetation and notice lower water levels in lakes and reservoirs. However, there are also long-term effects that are not immediately visible, such as land sinking, intrusion of saltwater into freshwater sources, and harm to ecosystems. These impacts may be harder to observe, but they can be more expensive and challenging to address in the long run.
