The Roads Policing Unit is a department that provides specialist skills and support across the counties of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, with specific responsibilities for policing the strategic road network and casualty reduction. In addition to providing an emergency response to incidents on the road its work is directed towards reducing casualties and offending and in particular at disrupting the activities of travelling criminals.
The RPU work with the National Police Chiefs' Council roads policing strategy, Policing our Roads Together, which has
five strands:
Casualty reduction.
Counter-terrorism.
Reducing anti-social use of the roads.
Denying criminals the use of the roads.
Public reassurance by high visibility patrolling of the road network.

Roads Policing Response Team
The Roads Policing Response Team respond to serious and fatal collisions, incidents on fast roads, and assist other Commands and specialist teams with technical or specialist skills, advice or equipment. They work towards reducing road casualties by enforcing road traffic legislation. Training includes fast roads training, traffic induction course, towing, speed detection, drug impairment detection, vehicle examination, response motorcycle course, advanced driving course, Tactical Pursuit and Containment Tactics, escort techniques, tachograph examination & collision scene examination.
Proactive Team
This unit uses unmarked cars across the force area. Instead of just responding to incidents, the unit uses a proactive approach by actively looking for criminals and catching them in the act, as well as patrolling areas based on intelligence.
Serious Collision Investigation Unit
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit investigate the most serious collisions, which result in either life changing injuries or fatalities. Training includes PIP, Detective, Family Liaison Officers, Achieving Best Evidence (ABE), CCTV and Advance Exhibits Trained.
Forensic Collision Investigation Unit
The Forensic Collision Investigation Unit responds to fatal collisions. They gather the physical evidence at the scene and produce detailed reports reconstructing the circumstances leading to the collision. They are regarded as expert witnesses. Training includes response & advanced driving, response motorcycle course, C/E/CE driving licence, vehicle examination, scene examination & degree level qualification in collision investigation.
Commercial Vehicle Unit
The CVU concentrate their patrols in collision hotspots and use various tactics to detect and enforce offences causing danger to other road users. They also police at pre planned stop sites removing the most dangerous vehicles from the road. They also conduct operations with the South East Counter Terrorism Unit to capture high risk individuals travelling to and from the UK. Additionally, they provide response to serious and fatal collisions involving large vehicles, and attend all bridge strikes. Training includes tachograph examination, vehicle examination, response driving, drug impairment, heavy vehicle vocational driving & HAZMAT training.
Road Safety Unit
The RSU is responsible for engaging with road users, mainly on social media and interacting with local residents about how to drive safely on the roads. The unit explains about driving under the influence as well as using mobile phones.
Motorcycle Team
The Motorcycle Team is a part-time sub-unit of officers that specialises in the use of police motorcycles, both on and off-road to tackle offenders, respond to incidents quickly and where necessary, escort vehicles.
Proactive Team
The Special Escort Group provides a specialist motorbike escort for members of the Lieutenancy’s Office and local government Councillors who are visiting and travelling around areas in Hampshire such as Portsmouth. This unit is led by a Sergeant.
