Inspiration
Jake spicer's art style focuses on detailed, realistic portraits. He emphasizes volume & light. His techniques involves blending shades & marks to show the physical and emotional expression of his models. His tips on colored pencils are: start w/ dark shades, add warm skin colors, then the features. (300)
Planning and Practice
Created a mind map 4 ideation, incorporate elements from p2 & p5. Practiced w/ colored pencil, drawing several faces w/ various expressions & color palettes. Edited a reference image on iPad, replaced the face w/ mine holding a camera, & adding a fisheye lens effect like camera zoom-in effect. (294)
Experimentation
Tried out with different levels of saturation, tint, shadows, sharpness, temperature, exposure, and brightness using the iPad photo edit feature. Adjusted these settings to find out what visually made me in the artwork stand out more, testing many combinations. (261)
Process
Drew myself 1st, focusing on facial features. 1) dark shades, 2) warm tones. Blend the colors& layer w/ colored pencil 4 features& details. Drew bg, reference the doll (p2) & bowls/toys (p5). Warm colors& brown 4 the floor. Bright middle horizontal line 2 make the objects on the floor 2 stand out. (298)
Reflection and Revision
I am happy with some parts of the outcome for this project. I became better at drawing human faces using colored pencils. I expanded my skills of blending and shading for portraits. Jake Spicer's artworks inspired me, especially his use of colors. His realistic yet unique style influenced my approach to drawing faces. I followed his tips on how to illustrate faces with colored pencils. The biggest challenge was deciding how to draw the background since the perspective is top to down (at me). I feel like the backgroound looks a bit flat, and I will revise it to make it better. My previous projects also focused on colored pencils, but they were object-based. For this project, I wanted to learn how to illustrate faces. I also wanted to add elements from past projects (the doll from p2 and bowl/toys from p5). My favorite part was drawing my face. It was fun to experiment with colors like purple, green, navy, and brown to create facial tones. My least favorite was drawing the background. I wanted to make the floor look like wood, but it was difficult. I plan to revise it. I hope others view my work as a connected story, with small moments with my mom building up to shape who I am. These memories are important to me and reflec my growth.
