Community-engaged learning project description & reflection:
I had the chance to use the ACLS with a client at the workplace activity center, and I was able to guide the client through the entire process while performing whip/running stitches. Having the opportunity to practice and apply the ACLS on a real client was a good experience. The ACLS is an assessment screen tool that can be used to identify unidentified or anticipate issues with functional cognition as well as to quickly assess learning potential, performance abilities, and global cognitive processing capacities. The ACLS has six levels that can be used to establish a client's level of score. As an OT practitioner, it was helpful to learn about cognitive levels throughout the workplace to determine a client's capacity for creating challenging but manageable tasks and to prioritize their safety. Understanding cognition is crucial as future occupational therapists since without it, interventions won't work with clients who are unable to comprehend or follow instructions. Knowing cognitive levels as a future occupational therapist will assist the client in selecting the appropriate activity task based on their cognitive level.
