Below, you can find a description of our categories for the event! In the top section there is a summary of each category, and further down the page you can find a more in-depth description, in addition to the sponsor of the category and resources to educate you on the issue the category is trying to address!
The purpose of these categories is to inspire you to create solutions that align with specific pieces of the Black Lives Matter movement. When submitting your project, you can submit the project for any one of these categories! You do not have to submit your project for a specific category. However, for each category, the organizers and the category sponsor will chose a small number of projects that we think are outstanding, and will publicize and showcase these projects at the end of the event.
Much of the Black Lives Matter movement has been at the community level, such as protests, fundraising, and outreach. Projects in this category will work to organize their communities to support and fight for Black people and issues.
Uplifting the voices of Black creatives is pushing for black voices to be seen and heard in mass media. Projects in this category will work toward promoting Black art/artists in an effort to unleash the power it has as a platform for Black narratives. (Art above by @airyvision)
Promoting the teaching of Black history and a knowledge of issues affecting Black communities allows one to better understand how oppressive systems were put into place and how they continue to succeed. Projects in this category will work to integrate this understanding into any and all education.
As our world becomes increasingly integrated with complex algoirthms making decisions that effect our every day lives, it has become increasingly clear that these algorithms are not free of bias and can actively contribute to the systemic racism that Black people and communities face. Projects in this category will work to identify, call out, and reduce such algorithmic bias.
Removing legislation that hurts Black communities and helping to create new legislation to address issues within our community. Projects in this category will work to address racism within our political system and make sure our representatives are working for the people and not for themselves.
We are working hard with our partners to finalize our category selections! Check back later for the complete list.
