As the Hack for Black Lives Organizers, we have three objectives for hackers who participate in Hack for Black Lives. At the end of your hackathon experience, we hope that you can take these three things away.
A hacker will leave H.B.L. better educated about the issues and injustices the Black Lives Matter Movement is addressing, and with a better understanding about their role in the solution. We hope to provide hackers of all education levels with the opportunity to continue to educate themselves on not just the Black Lives Matter movement alone, but how they can actively provide support.
A hacker will leave H.B.L. having leveraged their skills, education, and platform to create a tangible solution that battles the systemic racism and injustice that Black People and Communities face. A hacker will have gained the confidence and understanding that they can continue to do so even after the Hackathon is over.
A hacker will leave HBL having met and worked with people from a diverse group of backgrounds who share the same passion for the Black Lives Matter movement. From these formed connections, a hacker will leave Hack for Black Lives knowing there are inspiring people who they can continue to work with to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
In order to better understand how we will empower our hackers to achieve these objectives, we have split up our support system into three components: the pre-hackathon experience, the hackathon experience, and the post hackathon experience. Below you will find in more detail exactly what you can expect as a hacker participating in Hack for Black Lives.
In the Pre-Hack experience, Hackers will have the opportunity to listen to speakers and participate in discussions to become better educated about the Black Lives Matter movement and their role. Through these discussions, we hope that our hackers will become inspired to create a solution using their skills and passions, and will be able to understand how the true effects of this solution as they move into its implementation. Stay tuned on the logistics page for what exactly this process will look like and who our speakers will be!
During the two-day hackathon hackers will build on their education and discussions to create tangible solutions! In order to inspire and guide hackers in developing these solutions, we have provided categories in which hackers can create their projects. In addition, each hacker or team of hackers will have mentors available to talk through their projects and understand their full impact.
After the hacking is done, each hacker or team of hackers will submit their projects and have a chance to talk about them with other hackers! Through these discussions we hope that you will inspire each other with your work, and have the opportunity to discuss how this work can move forward, beyond only the weekend of the hackathon!
