Our team, H2Oboken, is made up of four students from Hoboken High School. We are members of the Hoboken High School Environmental Science Club and hope to apply what we learn in school to positively impact our community and the world around us.
Zoe Magaletta is a lifelong Hoboken resident and member of Hoboken High School’s senior class. She has served as the Hoboken High Environmental Science Club President since September 2023, where she has taken part in scientific research and studied climate resilience alongside her peers in projects including the Student Spaceflight Exploration Program competition and #NJSTEM Communities Challenge. In addition, she worked as a lab assistant for two years in the Hoboken Middle School River Explorer program, is Woodwind Captain in the Rockin' Redwings Marching Band, and is a member of the Debate Program and National Honor Society at Hoboken High. Zoe now attends Carleton College in Minnesota, where she studies environmental policy.
Laika Linder (They/She) is a senior at Hoboken High School and a long-time member of the Environmental Science Club, serving as its vice president since 2023. They assisted in leading the Hoboken River Explorers program for two years, worked on the Student Spaceflight Exploration Program competition, and won the #NJSTEM Communities Challenge project. Through these efforts, Laika has worked toward increasing education and understanding of climate change. Outside of the Environmental Science Club, Laika is also active in a plethora of other activities, being the President of the Gender Sexuality Alliance, a senior member of the Debate Team, and is pursuing their pilot's license (but not their driver's license). They're now studying Politics and Global Studies at Brandeis University.
Ian Crespi is a senior at Hoboken High School who has participated in a wide variety of activities including being the President of the Robotics Club, a member of both the National Honor Society and National Spanish Honors Society, as well as designing the #NJSTEM Communities Challenge project, as well as competing in the SSEP (Student Spaceflight Exploration Program) competition. In addition, Ian is currently working on obtaining a pilot's license in high school and continuing with engineering in college as a mechanical or aerospace engineer.
Rowan Ellison attended Hoboken High School from 2018 to 2022 and was an active member of the school's Environmental Science Club, Debate Team, and band. In the Environmental Science Club, Rowan worked extensively on designing and creating the H2Oboken Project for the #NJSTEM Communities Challenge during his senior year. Now a junior in college, Rowan is studying Computer Science at Brown University, with a particular interest in theoretical areas such as logic and formal systems. As he is in college, Rowan is not with the project, but his contributions have been invaluable in getting it to be implemented in Hoboken.
Jean Lebegue is a Biology Teacher at Hoboken High School who is passionate about student led, experiential learning. Mr. Lebegue teaches biomedical science, Pre-AP Biology and AP Biology at the school. He is currently the advisor of the school's USABiolympiad Club and the Hoboken High School Environmental Science Club, where he advised the #NJSTEM Communities Challenge and the H2Oboken project. He has previously led the River Explorer Institute at Hoboken Middle School and advised the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program. Prior to teaching at HHS, he taught college level biology at Fairleigh Dickinson University and Ramapo College and has also worked in the field of biological research. He holds his B.S. and M.S in Biology from Ramapo College and NJIT, respectively.
