All gardening kits have been given out! Check out our website to learn more about our work!
For years, our city has experienced flooding and Hoboken is vulnerable to severe storm surges, which harm our homes and utilities. To combat this, we realized we can increase the amount of green space in Hoboken, increasing water retention capabilities. By inviting the public to bring gardens to empty rooftops and outdoor spaces, we will involve the Hoboken community in resiliency efforts.
As part of the the 2021 #NJSTEM Communities Challenge project, we established H2Oboken under the Hoboken High School Environmental Science Club. We developed practical rooftop garden kits for our community after surveying local buildings and testing soils for water retention capabilities. The idea was a great success, as we ultimately won the state-wide challenge. However, H2Oboken lacked the funds to execute our plan on a large scale, and we believed the project was doomed to never come to fruition.Â
However, in the summer of 2024, three of the four remaining members (the fourth was in college) revived the idea when the City of Hoboken's Youth Climate Action Fund received support from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Impressing the city with our proposal, we secured the $5,000 microgrant needed to kickstart the project. We have ordered materials for our kits and are reaching out to the people of Hoboken to distribute in mid-December 2024. We are excited for the future of this project and for it to manifest after years of work.
