As a member of Grizedale College, you are part of a thriving social community with vibrant nights out and a exemplary college sport teams. There is no stereotypical 'Grizedale student', we are a diverse community

After such a strange and unusual year, we are so excited to be able to welcome you into our family. We have done whatever we can to ensure you have the best freshers given the situation. Even though it's not the week any of us wanted, we hope you enjoy everything we have been able to do. We can't wait for the day that we get to throw you our legendary Eurovision party, Winter Ball, Extrav or even a 'normal'' freshers week (when it's safe to). But for now, we have done what we can try make sure your intro into our wonderful college is as normal as usual.

We are one of the smallest colleges on campus, but we have the biggest impact. We are known as the social college for good reason, our extrav sells out in record time and other colleges are envious of our community and spirit. We are renowned for our social side but our sports teams continue to be some of the best on campus, with Grizedale netball, football or the bar sports winning their way to play at Roses each year and with us winning our annual sporting tournament 'Warriors' against Pendle college; we never to succeed in all areas, from sports to academia.

This website will be here to keep you updated around Freshers week and give you the best information regarding college life, self-care and all other things university related. This year, as fresher packs will unfortunately not contain free club entry for the week, we are giving a pack away for free - consisting of a lanyard, water bottle, face mask, laptop sticker and much more, all customised with our college logo!

The people that you make memories with this year, will last a lifetime. The friends you make, will be sitting next to you in graduation. The family you find in Grizedale will always be here to support you.

Meet the JCR :

The Junior Common Room or JCR, as it's better known, is the elected group of 14 officer roles who run the college's events, activities and campaigns. Each year these students are elected into their role in December for a year and take on huge responsibility of creating the following: Freshers week, Extrav (the biggest end of year party, with our college extrav being the most sought after ticket), Winter Ball (the college formal during Michaelmas term), Warriors (the sporting competition against Pendle) and our annual Eurovision party (the biggest on campus, which needs no explanation).

The JCR have a set of teams: the president or presidents in our case, lead the team and hold the most responsibility for making sure everything runs smoothly. There is 2 Vice-presidents (VPs) under the presidents who lead a specific team - 1 leads a with 3 social officers under them and the other leads a team of 3 welfare related officer position roles. A Democracy & Finance officer also works closely with the presidents to keep everything in budget and make sure elections run smoothly. A team of 2 media & comms officers head up the social media, creating all the amazing content you witness to keep you informed. Last but by no means least, 2 sports officers - a women's and men's sports officers are mainly responsbile for Warriors and any issues their respective college sports might have

Equally, as theres a Junior Common Room, there is a Senior Common Room or SCR. However, this is not made up of undergraduate students but the college Principal, college manager, accommodation manager, the deanry and the welfare 'CAT' team. Who all work closely with the JCR to provide the best experience for you.

We work hard all year to make sure your college experience is the best on campus and we are always here to support you.

Dr Karen Wright - Principal of Grizedale Collge & Senior Lecturer in LEC

It’s testament to your JCR, who help to create the unique community spirit that exists here at Grizedale, that our members come together to help out the community and forge new friendships.

You’ll connect with your fellow boars the moment you step in the door – joining our inclusive, diverse college family. As much as safely possible during these Covid times, we offer social, cultural and sports activities to ensure you enjoy a balanced lifestyle, combining study, community and fun as you make your transition from teenage life to independence.

Featuring a popular bar, some secret study spaces and outdoor areas for small gatherings, we also offer personal welfare support from dedicated staff and volunteer students from your JCR.

"During my first year at Lancaster University, I lived in the superior ensuite accommodation within Grizedale College. I loved living here as I felt like I was right in the heart of the college, and since it wasn’t far for me to go to the college bar/study rooms, I managed to attend most if not all of the college events in my first year. I made so many great friends and ended up living with the same people again!

Milly's story

"When first applying to Lancaster, I remember thinking that being part of a College sounded like a great way to make friends outside of my course. Grizedale looked like the most interesting and welcoming, so it was a no-brainer really! I lived on campus for the entirety of my undergraduate degree, in Superior En-Suite, Twin Studio, and then Standard Accommodation, all of which were lovely. My closest friends to this day are those I lived with in first-year, and without being a member of Grizedale it is unlikely we would have ever met as we all studied different courses. We went on to live together in our third year too.
