Next Meet Up: 12th April 11:30am Lesnes Abbey Wood
Ralph's health journey has been a bit of a whirlwind (as most sausage dogs lives are!) but we're steadily making progress and staying on top of everything.
He's currently managing luxating patella and hip dysplasia, both of which put him at a higher risk of developing arthritis and Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) as he grows. To keep ahead of it all, his vets have recommended yearly scans and check ups so we can monitor changes early - and help manage any issues proactively rather than reactively.
Over recent months, we've also introduced new medications that have made a noticeable difference in reducing his licking and chewing behaviours. Though he is still occasionally limping/'bunny hopping' when running, but we're seeing steady improvements which is reassuring.
Since June this year, Ralph has been attending The Pet Health & Therapy Centre in Welling DA16 2RE, for hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and red light therapy. At first he wouldn't even come out from under the table in fear - now he willingly goes in without me, and although he still delivers his signature dramatic dachshund expression, he lets the team do what they need! He used to go weekly, now we alternate fortnightly sessions: one hydrotherapy, one physiotherapy/red-light.
For joint support and general wellbeing we use Gold Dust Powder and the other supplements mentioned in the 'Food & Supplements' section.
He is also due for chemical castration at the end of the month, and I am hopeful that will help further with his joint stability and behaviour. If the pain management and castration don't fully address some of his more challenging behaviours (typical intact sausage style), I am on the lookout for a behaviourist to give us extra support.
Ralph's Tip: Walk, Wiggle, Hydro, Repeat - but never skip a treat".
