Next Meet Up: 12th April 11:30am Lesnes Abbey Wood
Over the almost two years of Ralph's life, we've been through a lot of harnesses, coats and jumpers - and yes, I still have his very first tiny ones tucked away because I can't believe how small he used to be!
Ralph has to be walked on a harness (he's a bit of a puller), so comfort and fit have always come first. We've tried several brands over time - The Paw Print Boutique, Wagnificent Boutique, and The Adorable Pooch Co and more - always choosing Y shaped harnesses, as they're the best for dachshunds' long chests and don't restrict shoulder movement.
These days, we use the Twiggy Tags Apex Harness Nebula , and it's been amazing! The fit is secure, supportive and it's been amazing! The fit is secure, supportive, and really well made, with padded straps that don't rub and adjustable sections that actually suit his shape. It's durable, easy to wash, and stylish without compromising comfort - a total win!
As much I'd love to have a wardrobe full of different colours to match his jumpers, I have to think about what's best for his walking style, joints and comfort, so practicality always win (though we're slowly working on getting more matching pieces!).
Clothing:
Ralph is a proud rep for Bleu's Clawset, and we absolutely love their jumpers and waterproof tummy jumpers - perfect for muddy walks and chilly days. He also hasa jumper from them made from bamboo material, which is brilliant for those 'not too warm, not too cold' days, you can dampen it to help keep them cool in the summer.
When it rains (much to his disgust), he wears a Pets at Home coat, and for cold seasons or chilly evenings, he has his growing collection of jumpers and fleeces - including an Equafleece and a handmade one from Etsy. Finding a perfect fit for his shape can be tricky, so made to measure pieces have been a game changer...although measuring him is a mission in itself, since he's absolutely petrified of the tape measure!
He often runs and hides when he sees the harness and/or jumper come out, and once it's finally on, he goes completely stiff and forgets how to walk...pure dachshund drama at it's finest!
I wash all his clothes with non bio detergent to avoid skin reactions, and I only give them a good wash when they're properly dirty and smelly (which happens a lot - he loves a good roll once he's usually dressed up, fox poo is his favourite).
Fitting & Comfort Types:
Always go for a Y shaped harness for dachshunds, they give proper support and don't strain the shoulders.
Measure the chest and back length carefully.
Non bio dtergent is safest for sensitive skin.
Choose breathable frabrics like bamboo or fleece, depending on the season.
For those with drama prone dachshunds - patience, treats and humour is essential.
Ralph's Tip: "If it involves clothes, I'm hiding. If it involves rolling in mud after clothes, I'm ready!".
