Finding the right food for Ralph was definitely a journey! With a mix of high and medium intolerances, it took a lof of trial and error to work out what suited him. I switched him over to raw food at 4 months old. OMG when the 6 month 'food regression' stage hit (if you don't know then you need to get to know!), I drove myself insane! I tried it all: different wet foods, kibble, raw options, hand feeding, slow feeders, different bowls, even floor feeding...it was a stressful few weeks!
Despite the food regression, I found raw feeding worked best for him. I introduced one protein at a time to see what agreed (and didn't!). We eventually discovered that duck is his go-to protein - it keeps his tummy happy! He can tolerate small amounts of beef, pork and turjey as an occasional mix, but too much upsets his stomach.
His absolute favourite is Durham's Duck & Pumpkin - gentle, tasty and great for digestion. We mainly use: Durham Animal Feeds, Benyfit Nautral, Dougie's and Drool.
They all are 80/10/10 blends - that's 80% meat, 10% bone and 10% offal. If Ralph ever has a overly hard and chalky food I know this indicates he's having too much bone, so I feed a boneless meal for a couple of days before going back to normal.
Supplements We Love:
To support his digestion and overall health I use-
Logan's Slippery Elm Bark: soothing for his stomach and helps keep everything settled.
Gold Dust Powder: great for coat, joints and general wellbeing.
Pets Purest Plaque Powder: helps keep his teeth clean and breath fresh naturally.
He also enjoys a spoonful of low fat natural yoghurt a couple of times a week in with his food, as a frozen treat or on a licky mat. It's packed with probiotics, which help keep his gut healthy, support digestion, and can even give his immune system a little boost, Plus, he absolutely loves it - it's like his mini dessert!
We have tried YuMove in the past for joint support, but one of the ingredients didn't agree with him and cause a lot if itching, so now we avoid that one!
Ralph's Tip: "Duck for dinner, yoghurt for dessert - that's how you stay fabulous!"
