- UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner
Water is our most valuable resource, but it is the most vulnerable to pollution due to it being the "universal solvent." It can dissolve more substances than any other liquid, and this makes it extremely easy to pollute.
Agriculture
Industrial Waste
Plastics
Oil
Marine Dumping
Sewage
Algae Blooms
Mining Runoff
Sadly, roughly 80% of human wastewater flows directly into our environment without being treated for harmful pollutants. This devastates our ecosystem, shocking plants and making a scarce resource even harder to find. We continue to pay the price as this unsafe water makes 1 billion people sick every calendar year. The result is roughly 505,000 people losing their lives to a problem that is completely within our control.
