Nitrogen dioxide is a gas pollutant that is formed when fossil fuels are burned in high temperatures. NO2 is part of a group of highly reactive gases known as nitrogen oxides (NOx). Road transport is the main source of nitrogen oxides, responsible for 37% of emissions.
NO2 and other NOx react with chemicals in the atmosphere and form acid rain, particulate matter, and ozone.
Causes haziness in the air, decreasing visibility.
Contributes to nutrient pollution in coastal waters by causing excessive algal growth that, in excess, produces toxins that harm aquatic life, land animals, and plants.
When SO2 and NOx are released into the atmosphere and react with oxygen, water, and other chemicals, they form sulfuric and nitric acids.
These acids can mix with water and other components and fall on the surface in the form acid rain.
Acid rain penetrates the soil, leaching aluminium from soil clay particles, and flows into streams and lakes.
This harms both aquatic and terrestrial life, killing fish, frogs, trees, and others.
