Land use change is the conversion of land from one use to another by humans. Commonly, forested areas are cleared to make room for grazing, housing developments, factories, and agriculture. This is an increasing problem, as the need for food and housing continue to increase. Unfortunately, this frequently comes at the expense of forested areas, disrupting ecosystems and removing one of earth's natural carbon dioxide removers. Balancing the introduction of these land use conversions with leaving forested areas protected is important for both humans and animals.
The logging industry is an essential business that provides wood for construction, paper, furniture, and heat. For logging to be environmentally friendly, planting new trees and creating protected areas is important. This is not always the reality, as many companies take advantage of illegal logging, which goes against these laws that protect forests. For example, IKEA has been accused of contributing to the deforestation of some of Romania's oldest forests, some of which have been protected by law.
