Reforestation is the process of restoring forested areas that have been cleared or thinned, naturally or unnaturally. This is done by planting trees in the same area on which they were recently removed from. Afforestation is the process of planting trees in an area in which there has not been recent. In some cases, site preparation is needed to support the growth of these new trees. Both of these strategies help return or introduce trees into an environment, helping cool down the area, cleaning the air, and boosting biodiversity.
Creating laws to protect certain areas of forests is one way to stop rapid deforestation. These laws regulate how many trees can be cut down, where you can cut down trees, and how forests must be replanted after logging. In Romania, one of the laws passed to help combat deforestation is "Codul Silvic". Unfortunately, like in many counties, Romania has had weak enforcement of these laws, allowing for illegal logging to continue. even in protected areas.
Sustainable consumption refers to consuming less paper, single use packaging, and using recycled wood products. Choosing digital alternatives to paper, reusing paper and furniture, and buying recycled paper products are all choices that help. By decreasing the demand for new product that's use wood, the need for the sourcing of wood will also decrease, resulting in less deforestation. These small choices can make a big impact, helping to protect Romania's valuable forests.
