LOOKING FOR AN OLD BIRTH, DEATH, OR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE?
The Office of the Greene Municipal Historian retains all birth, death, and marriage certificates past their "confidential retention points," under the authorization of the Town Clerk. The Historian will issue a transcription of any of these records to an authorized source, in accordance with New York State Law. Again, these copies are transcriptions, and are for research purposes ONLY. These transcriptions cannot be used for any legal purposes. This service is completed under the authority of the Town Clerk. If you need to obtain a copy of one or more of these documents, please click the corresponding button below, and it will take you to a copy of the request form, which MUST be filled out and MAILED back to the Municipal Historian's Office in order to fulfill the request. If you are unable to print a copy, you may send an email to: bbernardi@nygreene.com and a copy can be mailed to you to be filled out and returned. One request form is good for ONE transcription. Please be sure to include duplicate request forms if you are needing more than one transcription. Please be sure that the form if identification is included with the request form(s). Certificates that surpass the dates below will be in the Historian's archives. If the request(s) fall before the mentioned time frames, or you need a certified copy of a certificate, you will be routed to the Town Clerk for certified copies.
REQUIREMENTS FOR REQUEST:
Birth Certificates - if on file for at least 75 years and the person whose name is on the birth certificate is known to be deceased.
Death Certificates - if on file for at least 50 years.
Marriage Certificates - if on file for at least 50 years and both spouses are known to be deceased.
Are the time periods ever waived?
The time periods are waived for direct-line descendants. A direct-line descendant is a person in the direct line of descent (i.e. the child, grandchild, great grandchild) of the person whose record is requested. The direct-line descendant application must provide the following:

Proof of the death of the person whose birth certificate they are requesting.
Proof of the death of both spouses whose marriage certificate they are requesting.
Regulations for certificates received and set by New York State Department of Health. https://www.health.ny.gov/vital_records/genealogy.htm
