It's hard to discuss the history of Great Shelford for any length of time without mentioning the Enclosure. The Enclosure was probably the most radical event in the history of the village. It turned upside down the whole way in which land was owned in the village, and overthrew, at a stroke, a centuries-old way of farming. So I am going to take you through the whole process, starting with the world that prevailed before it, and ending by considering who, when it was all over, were the winners and who the losers from the process.
This section on Enclosure is a work in progress. I will add further pages as my research allows.
