Add a Link to Your Teams Video Meeting Space

Many instructors are using Teams to teach students at a distance. This involves somehow sharing a link to your meeting/class for students to click on to join. There are MANY ways to do this and everyone has to find what makes sense for them.

ONE option is to use Moodle for most everything - the grade book, handouts, assessment, and so on - and then use Teams simply as a way for students at a distance to see you teach. For many of you, this is the simple option, other than you have to somehow get a link to your students every time you have a class. Here's the magic... you can use the exact same link every time. You do NOT need to set up a link for every class. You do NOT need to add students to Teams if you are only using it as a meeting place.

Instead, you just need one link and you need to somehow get that to your students.

Get the Link

Log into Teams. (This works using either the web browser version or the installed software version. It does not matter at all which you use.) Then, I prefer to go to the Calendar tab (on the left side you should find that) since that makes it super easy to set up a meeting.

  1. At the top right, click on Meet Now.

  2. If you would like, change the Meeting Name to your course name.

  3. Click on Get a link to share.

Put the Link in Moodle

Log into Moodle. Most instructors using this method add this link somewhere near the top of the course. You can choose to put it anywhere but for the sake of this tutorial, I'm assuming you want it near the top.

Turn Editing On.

Click on the first Add an activity or resource.

Select Label. This will open the editing window to design your label.

In the first box (Label text) type whatever words you want the students to see, something like Link to Class Video Meetings

Use your mouse to highlight those same words. Then click on the little chain on the toolbar to insert a link.

A popup will open - in Link URL paste that link that you got from Teams. In the second box, change the Target to Open in New Window. Click Insert.

Save and Return to Course.

Inform Your Students!

Let your students know where to find the link. Most instructors teaching at a distance email their students before that first class to let them know the plan. I would email and remind them to go to Moodle - that is where they will find the link to the class, grades, handouts, etc.
