Detangling Tools
If your hair has any matted knots, you've just taken down your braids, or if it's been more than 2 weeks since you've washed, gently detangle with a brush on dry hair before showering.
Otherwise use your fingers to gently separate and stretch your hair while shampooing and detangle completely with a brush while conditioning your hair with lots of water.
I do not recommend a wide tooth comb as it will not remove shed hair, causing the shed hair to create more tangles.
I usually prefer my Felicia Leatherwood Brush With The Best, but it is currently and is often out of stock. These are my favorite alternatives.
Tools to make life easier
If you have curly hair be sure to apply your styling products on soaking wet detangled hair. Your hair should feel like seaweed in the ocean. Section your hair in manageable sizes and apply your stylers on soaking wet hair.
For loose curls and waves gently scrunch with microfiber or plop to absorb excess moisture. Diffuse for extra definition and bounce.
Tight curls may lose definition if you towel dry too much, but it you need to reduce dry time try gently sandwiching your hair between a microfiber and pressing (not scrunching) to soak up moisture. The water in your hair helps add weight to increase stretch, so if shrinkage is a concern leave as much water as possible in your hair with a high hold gel and go under a dryer.
How to protect your hair while you sleep
If you experience shrinkage throughout the week after setting your hair, I recommend using high hold gels and simply fluffing and going when you wake up. Refreshing with water will create more shrinkage and frizz.
If you have looser curls that do not shrink in the days following your style, you can spritz a little water on your curls and scrunch to refresh in the morning.
